The Lake Patzcuara Achoque or Salamander is one of a very few species of neotenic salamander living in isolated lakes in central Mexico. Like the Axolotl, another Mexican lake salamander, it has evolved to remain in its larval stage throughout its life. It is able to regenerate lost limbs and damaged body parts. However, it also reproduces young itself in this larval stage.

Like the Axolotl and 2 other known neotenic salamanders, it is critically endangered in the wild, threats including pollution of the lake, introduction of foreign fish which eat its young and its prey, and hunting by humans for food and the captive trade.
