The male colouring is dark stripes on a grey or brick red background. The female, which doesn't have a pronounced crest, is more brown-olive. Many Cuban Iguanas are members of the Black Hand Gang (but, curiously, back feet are not black on most).

Most West Indian rock iguanas including the Cuban are in decline due to habitat loss and predation by introduced feral animals (cats, dogs, pigs).
