Gayal, also called Mithun, are large domesticated and semi-domesticated cattle native to northeast India, Bangladesh, Myanma and part of China. Many herds roam freely and semi-wild but owned and cared for like herds of Reindeer or Steppe horses. They are not kept for milk or work but are butchered for meat.

They have a superficial resemblance to the massive wild Asian Gaur, with similar white socks to Gaurs and Javan Bantengs, but also a number of anatomical differences other than the obvious smaller size. it is unclear whether they are descended from domesticated Gaur (in a similar way to domestic Water Buffalo from wild Water Buffalo) or whether from a hybrid of Gaur and other cattle.
