The African Wattled Lapwing is also called the Senegal (Wattled) Lapwing or Plover although it is native to much of sub-Saharan Africa, not just Senegal/west. The bird shown above left with large orange-bordered yellow face wattle has had his sharp wing-spurs broken off.

It is related to the Spur-winged Lapwing (Vanellus spinosus), also of Africa, eastern Mediterranean and near/Middle East, and also to the wattled Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles) of Australia which used to be called the Spur-winged Plover (and still is locally).
