The Silvery-cheeked Hornbill comes from the eastern part of sub-Saharan Africa. Both male and female have mainly black iridescent plumage with a white back, thighs and under tail ends, a silvery-grey wash to the face and an ivory-coloured casque (horn above bill).

The female (above) has red skin around her eyes. Although the casque on both (and other hornbills) looks as if it is broken, it isn't -- it is how the casque grows.

Other Black and White "Bycanistes" Hornbills

Black and white casqued hornbill BLACK and WHITE CASQUED HORNBILL, Bycanistes subcylindricus, is native to central and West Africa. Also called the Grey-cheeked Hornbill, it is related to the Silvery-cheeked but has a white lower body and wings.
