Red and Green Conures Psittacara sp. (prev. Aratinga)

Like the Macaws and Amazons, the Conures are native to South and Central America and the Caribbean. The (former) Latin name of many conures is " Aratinga", -- "little macaw".

Most Aratinga conures with plain green plumage or red on green have been moved to genus Psittacara.

Even more confusing, the larger Scarlet-fronted with grey iris, (Psittacara wagleri frontata), above, has recently been subdivided and is now called the Cordilleran Conure/Parakeet (Psittacara frontata). Native to southwestern Ecuador to southern Peru, P. f. frontata is also still called the Scarlet-fronted by many.
