The Common Gull has a silver-grey back and wings with black wing-tips and white "mirrors". It is much smaller than the Herring Gull and has pale greeny-yellow legs. It sometimes has a black ring on its beak and its head is streaky grey in winter. In North America it is known as the Mew Gull (also an Old English variant).

Its "Common" name derives from flocks that feed on "common" land and sports fields; it is not the most common of gulls. It breeds in northern Eurasia and northwest America.
