The Marginated Tortoise is native to Greece, Italy and the Balkan states. It is the largest of the European tortoises and the most prevalent tortoise in Greece.
The "Greek Tortoise" is a different species (also called the Spur-thighed), hardly found in Greece. The Marginated is an
oblong-shaped tortoise with a slight "waist" in the middle of the shell. The young tortoises are more strongly marked than
older individuals. They can live for well over 100 years.
