The mis-named Willow Beauty is not one of the most beautiful of moths, nor does its caterpillar favour willows.
Above left is a female Willow Beauty with regular antennae and above right the amazing feathered antennae of the male -- for sensing pheromones.
The clarity of the pattern varies. Wingspan 30-38mm; UK flight time Jul-Sep.
Sometimes difficult to tell Willow Beauties, above, from Mottled Beauty (see key below).
On the forewing of Willow Beauty, second dark line comes close to third dark line, as illustrated
above; on Mottled Beauty (a very variable-patterned moth), second dark line ends short or joins
middle of first dark line.
