This is one of the several Tortrix moths which imitates the look of a bird dropping to deter predators. Identified as Gypsonoma sociana (which has no English common name) by the black lozenge on its back. |
This moth also has a black (greyish) lozenge on its back, but the marbled mantle is concave rather than convex (like Marbled Orchard Tortrix, etc) and it was flying in early May rather than the normal June-August flight period for the Gypsonoma sociana -- but since it was an exceptionally hot April it is included here for now. |
