The Barbary Macaque is sometimes called the Barbary Ape but it is a true monkey rather than ape despite not having a visible tail.
It is native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria and to part of Libya; with a population on the Rock of Gibraltar, is the only (non-human) primate living wild in Europe.
Like other macaques, it is a social animal with a distinct heirarchy. It is a female-dominated heirarchy with the direct descendants of the lead matriarch taking precedence.
The Barbary is also the only macaque species not native to Asia.
Unusually for primates, male Barbaries assist females to care for the troop's young. Babies are looked after by both males and females, by juveniles and adults.
Diet is mainly plants and insects.
