The Collared Lemur, also called the Collared Brown Lemur and (to distinguish from the White-collared Brown) the Red-collared Brown Lemur, is native to a small area of rainforest in southeastern Madagascar.

Originally described as a subspecies of the similar Common Brown Lemur, Eulemur fulvus, the (Red-)Collared Brown was given full species status in 2001. The also similar White-collared Brown (with white beard), formerly E. albocollaris, was renamed the Grey-headed Lemur, E. cinereiceps, in 2008.
