Andromeda Lacebug Stephanitis takeyai

Andromeda Lacebug
Andromeda Lacebug
The Andromeda Lacebug looks as if it is wearing chain mail and a helmet. The name Andromeda is not because of the chain connection, however, but because, like most lacebugs, it has a specific host plant and in this case it is Pieris plants and particularly Pieris japonica, the Japanese andromeda. Both plant and lacebug were imported from the Far East and the latter has spread as the cultivated hybrid Pieris Forest Flame plant has become popular in gardens. The Lacebug's eating habits cause spotting on the host plant leaves.
