The Tawny Mining Bee is a "solitary" "sand" bee which makes holes in the ground to nest. Although it sometimes nests in colonies, each bee has her own nest.
The nest is supplied with pollen and nectar for the larvae. An early bee, it is on the wing from March to May.
The Tawny Mining Bee has red-ginger hair on the topside of thorax and abdomen, darker on the thorax and lighter (two-tone) on the abdomen, and black on the underside.
It looks a little similar to the larger Red Mason Bee but has an all black face with black facial hair.
