Skipper butterflies look a little "moth-like" and hold their wings in an atypical pose. Large Skippers are only a little larger than the Small and Essex Skippers.

The male Large Skipper butterfly (above left and two above that) has a bold black vein on the topside of the forewing. The female Large Skipper does not have the bold black vein; both have slight chequered markings near the edge of the wing.
