Condor/Andean Condor

Vultur gryphus

Condor in flight Condor

The Condor is a vulture and has the largest wingspan of any flying landbird, at up to 10 feet. The one depicted here is also called the Andean Condor to distinguish it from the slightly smaller (up to 9 foot wingspan) and very rare Californian Condor (Gymnogyps californianus), the latter being a different species confined to southwest US and Mexico.

The Andean Condor, as its name suggests, is native to the Andes of South America.

The Condor is black with a white neck ruff and white on the topside of its wings and, like all vultures, has a bare head for hygiene.

The male Condor (photo above and below) has a "comb" on his face/head.
