The Bengal Eagle Owl, also called the Rock Eagle Owl and the Indian Eagle Owl, is native to the Indian sub-continent. It used to be considered a sub-species of the Eurasian Eagle Owl, to which it is superficially similar. Differences include a white chin, sometimes also a white throat (see photo further below) and a more strongly bordered facial disc. |
Mainly nocturnal, it will sometimes hunt in daytime. Prey is mainly small rodents but also includes reptiles, other birds and large insects. The female often flattens the "ear tufts" to her head but the male usually holds them upright. |
