Trichoglossus haematodus rosenbergii

Rosenberg's Lorikeet Rosenberg's Lorikeet

Rosenberg's Lorikeet is a "Rainbow" lorikeet. It has a dark head flecked with blue, a very different wide bright yellow nape flecked with red, red breast with heavy black feather edges, black stomach and pale yellow thighs with a little green flecking. The nape is quite different in appearance to the other Rainbow Lorikeets. A deep orange bar on the open wing in Rosenberg's compares to a yellow bar on open wings of all other Rainbow Lorikeets.

Rosenberg's comes from Biak Island, Irian Jaya, Indonesia and is sometimes known as the Biak Lorikeet.

Coconut/Massena's Lorikeet

Trichoglossus haematodus massena

Coconut Lorikeet Massena's Lorikeet

Another "Rainbow" lorikeet, the Coconut Lorikeet or Lory is probably so named since the birds are important pollinators of Coconuts for human food (while gathering nectar). It is also called Massena's Lorikeet. It has a dark head flecked with blue, a mid green nape (darker than Deplanche's), red breast with black-edged feathers, green stomach with slight yellow mottling on lower part and green thighs also with slight yellow mottling. It comes from eastern New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

There are many other sub-species, not all illustrated here
