The Purple-bellied Lory actually has a dark red wine-coloured upper belly but purple thighs, lower belly and vent. Two of the three sub-species are shown here: the nominate species (Lorius hypoinochrous) from Papua New Guinea in the last photo and Lorius hypoinochrous devittatus, also known as the Ferguson Island Purple-bellied Lory, from southeastern New Guinea in the first six photos. The difference in plumage between these is not noticeable in the photos since it occurs under the wings. |
