Red-crowned Kakariki Red-crowned Kakariki

The Red-crowned Parakeet, sometimes called the Red-fronted Parakeet or by its Maori name Kakariki, comes from New Zealand. It used to be abundant but is now extinct on the mainland (North & South Islands) and confined to offshore islands, including Stewart Island in the south. The decline is mainly due to introduced predators.

(There is also another species of "Red-crowned Parakeet", Pyrrhura roseifrons, from South America.)

Yellow-crowned Kakariki Have you seen the time?

The Yellow-crowned Parakeet or Kakariki population has also declined but it is still present on New Zealand's main two islands as well as some offshore islands.
