A brightly-coloured little bird, this is the male Double-eyed Fig Parrot from Papua New Guinea and Northeastern Australia, also called the Red-faced Fig Parrot.

The female has similar brightly-coloured plumage but with a pale yellow cheek rather than red. They eat seeds of figs, berries and other plants.

There are 8 sub-species (the nominate shown here) with varied plumage and females of some with no red and more blue on their faces are sometimes called the Blue-faced Fig Parrot.

"Cyclopsitta" is a strange name for a "doubled-eyed" parrot since Cyclops had only one eye and the English name suggests the bird has the appearance of four eyes.

The bird is also known by the alternative scientific name of Opopsitta diophthalma.
