| The Elegant Parrot, also called Elegant Grass Parakeet, is one of several small grass parrots from Australia, some of whose females look similar to the olive green Elegant (e.g. Red-rumped, Hooded). The male Elegant Parrot has similar plumage to the female (female is a little duller with a narrower dark blue brow band; juveniles don't have the brow band) instead of the bright colours of most other male grass parrots. Elegant Parrots come from two separate regions, one in southwestern Australia and one in the southeast of South Australia. | ||

The Blue-winged Parrot, also called the Blue-winged or Blue-banded Grass
Parakeet, looks very like the Elegant. Females and juveniles are duller in
colour than the males. Those shown above are juveniles so have not yet developed their blue brow bands and yellow bellies. Blue-winged Parrots come from southeast Australia, including Tasmania. Unusually for parrots, some Tasmanian birds migrate north to Australian mainland for the winter. |
