The Bare-throated Tiger Heron is present through Central America (from Mexico through to northern Colombia). It nests in pairs rather than colonies.
Alexandra Makhnina, who took the photos in Costa Rica, identifies it as a Bare-throated Tiger Heron rather than the similar Fasciated Tiger Heron "Because of its grey head (on cheeks, behind eyes)". Both Tiger Herons' ranges overlap in Central America. The Bare-throated prefers to hunt on large, open, slow-moving water and the Fasciated prefers fast-moving streams.
