various Cranes

Some Cranes live in wetlands/marshes and some on dry grassland/plains; they are included here as land birds rather than waterbirds

Black-necked Crane Black-necked Crane head Black-necked Crane
BLACK-NECKED CRANE, Grus nigricollis, comes from high altitude plains of Tibet, west China and far northern India.
Unlike the Red-crowned Crane which also has a mainly black neck, white body (without grey) and black legs/wing-tips, the Black-necked Crane has a fully black head except for its red crown.

Sarus Crane Sarus Crane head Sarus Cranes
SARUS CRANE, Grus antigone, comes from northern India, Nepal and parts of southeast Asia. At 6 foot, it is the tallest flying bird.

Blue Stanley Crane Blue Paradise Crane Siberian Crane
BLUE CRANE, also called STANLEY or PARADISE CRANE, Anthropoides paradiseus, is not a "Grus" species.
A small crane, it lives on the grasslands of southern Africa.
SIBERIAN CRANE
Siberian Crane Siberian Crane head Siberian Crane
SIBERIAN CRANE, Grus leucogeranus, also called Siberian White or Snow Crane, lives in wetlands in arctic Russia well north of the Siberian range of the White-naped Crane.
There are two separated populations, the eastern Russian one migrating to China in the harsh winters and the west Russian one to Iran, the longest migrations for a crane.
