Baer's Pochard breeds in eastern Russia and northeast China, wintering in Southeast Asia. Like other pochards, it will dive and swim under water to evade predators, but will then fly some distance from the danger. It feeds under water mainly at night.

Shown is a female, looking similar to a Ferruginous Duck. The eclipse male is similar with a white eye, but the breeding male looks more like a brown, drake Scaup. The duck is endangered due to hunting and wetland destruction.
