The male Red-crested Pochard in breeding plumage is a striking-looking drake, particularly when he raises his red crest. This handsome diving duck comes mainly from Southern Europe and Asia.

His bright red eyes match his scarlet bill

In some light he has a metallic green sheen on his black rump

The female Red-crested Pochard, as most female ducks, is much plainer.

She has one dress for all seasons, distinctive white cheeks and a black bill tipped with pink lipstick.

The drake looks quite untidy during transition to eclipse plumage

His eclipse (non-breeding) plumage looks similar to the female, but the fully red bill and red eyes are a giveaway
