Bruce's Green Pigeon, native to African savannah from
Nigeria in the west to Ethiopia in the east and part of the
Middle East, is most unusual among birds. Like Turacos, its green plumage is
produced by pigment rather than reflected
light. A fruit dove, the pigment is derived from the
specialised fig diet.
Male and female have similar plumage. Also unusually, the male
incubates the eggs and looks after the chicks by day and the
female by night.
