Song Thrush

Photos have been downgraded in size and quality for the Internet

The song thrush, less common in recent years, is often found in gardens breaking snails' shells against stones

(this one in my garden)

Song thrushes are often shy and elusive

The mistle thrush is larger and lighter-coloured than the song thrush. A UK resident usually seen singly or in pairs.

Link to Blackbird

Blackbirds are similar in size to song thrushes. Female and young blackbirds can be darkly speckled. Resident population is boosted by migrants in winter.

A female blackbird with a dappled front (as above) is sometimes confused with a thrush. Blackbirds belong to the Thrush group.

People sometimes think the dappled blackbird is a thrush. Blackbirds (male and female), however, will treat a thrush as an intruding blackbird and chase it off their territory.

Link: Redwings, winter migrants usually in groups, resemble song thrushes but with lighter face markings and reddish markings under the wings

Link: Fieldfares, also winter migrants in groups, often with redwings, are larger, with grey heads and brown backs.
