Collared Dove

Photos have been downgraded in size and quality for the Internet.

The collared dove has established a growing presence in UK and is common in mainland Europe.

It is greyer than its relative, the Barbary Dove and has dark wingtips ("primaries").

  Barbary Dove
The barbary dove, related to the collared dove, is a native of Africa. It has browner, creamier plumage and wingtips closer to the body colour.

  Collared/Barbary Dove Hybrid

Colouring of Collared Dove but lighter wing tips suggest this bird may be a hybrid.

A chiffchaff nestling is in the background.

The European collared dove and the African barbary dove live side by side in the Canary Islands and hybrids are common.
